THE TWO M’S STAND FOR “MARS” AND “MURRIE.” After Mars came up with the idea for M&M’s, he approached Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey’s Company president William Murrie, about going into business together. Murrie received a 20% stake in the company, and for several years M&M’s were made using Hershey’s chocolate.
A new line of M&Ms will hit store shelves across the country next year, and a new flavor will be made exclusively at the Mars Wrigley Confectionery factory in Cleveland, Tennessee. Three U.S. factories make M&Ms, but the Cleveland plant makes the widest variety, Site Director Mack Phillips said.
M&Ms didn’t have their signature “M” stamp until 1950. Shortly after wartime quotas ended and the candies were made available to the general public, Forrest Mars bought out Murrie’s shares in the company and took sole ownership of the M&M brand.
