Ford Motor Co. owns Ford and Lincoln. General Motors owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Hummer has returned as a GMC sub-brand.
Rising to prominence in the U.S. during the 1970’s with the Wankel rotary engine and the beloved RX-7 sports coupe, Mazda was part owned by Ford Motor Company from 1974 to 2015 and now stands as its own entity. With North America being its largest market, the company’s sole brand is Mazda.
Land Rover, along with Jaguar Cars, was bought by Tata Motors from Ford in 2008. The two British brands were joined under Tata Motors to become Jaguar Land Rover Limited in 2013.
Jaguar was once again its own company in 1984. In 1999, Jaguar was purchased by Ford and subsequently purchased Land Rover in 2000. Both brands were sold to Tata Motors in 2008.
Kia Motors bankruptcy Hyundai Motor Company gained 51% of Kia after outbidding Ford Motor Company. Ford owned significant Kia interest since 1986, however, the 1998 Hyundai deal changed that and the company became a wholly Korean car company.
Aston Martin was founded in London in 1913. Ford bought 75 percent of the brand in 1987 for an undisclosed amount and took full ownership in 1994 as it opened a new factory for the brand in Bloxham, England.
Cars underwent another name change to Jaguar Cars Limited. Jaguar was once again its own company in 1984. In 1999, Jaguar was purchased by Ford and subsequently purchased Land Rover in 2000. Both brands were sold to Tata Motors in 2008.
