From the first show Naruto in season 1, episode 29, the snake that bit sasuke in the neck made a mark of evil, soon he was gonna release or seal the snake power.
He is a rival of the titular protagonist Naruto Uzumaki. Despite being the overall deuteragonist of the series, the desire for revenge and the manipulation of Orochimaru and later Tobi made Sasuke into the main anti-villainous antagonist of both the middle of Part I and the whole of Part II.
Why Did Sasuke Turn Evil? Sasuke turns evil when he learns the Leaf Village forced Itachi to destroy the Uchiha clan. He received Orochimaru’s curse mark which caused his escape from the village, but he did not become a truly evil person until he felt the need to defend his brother.
Sasuke’s crimes were relatively minor, he attacked the 5 Kage summit but failed to kill anyone besides Danzo. Danzo was unpopular with the villages and considered a war criminal himself, as nobody trusted him.
Second, at the beginning of Shippuden, Sasuke was not really a “traitor”. What I mean is that he had nothing against the Leaf, the Kages or whatever. Sure, he went to Orochimaru, but he was only focused on his brother, so he was not a threat to anyone at that point.
Following the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sasuke spent a little time in Konoha’s prison for his actions. His decision to help the shinobi world bought him some favor, though, and officials released him.
He sought revenge against the Leaf for benefitting from his clan’s death, Itachi’s life, and his own life spent seeking a false revenge.
