Let’s return to the figures given by the Mint for the dime (2.268 grams) and quarter (5.670 grams), leaving aside for now the issue of exactly what 1 pound of such coins would consist of. Multiplying each number by 1,000, we conclude that a dime weighs 2,268 milligrams and a quarter weighs 5,670 milligrams.

A pound of dimes is worth about $20. The value of a pound of dimes can be calculated based on the weight of 2.27 grams for each dime produced by the U.S. Mint. Since 1 pound contains 453.59 grams, the number of dimes in 1 pound can be calculated by dividing 453.59 grams by 2.27 grams for a total of about 200 dimes.
It has a reeded edge, weighs 2.27 grams, and measures 17.9 millimeters in diameter. The dime’s outer layer is comprised of 75% copper and 25% nickel and has a 100% copper core. The dime’s metal value is 2 cents.
The most accurate way to measure grams is to use a scale. Choose a digital or mechanical scale that uses the metric system, then press the tare button to zero it out. Place your item on the center of the scale, wait for the scale’s digital display or needle to come to a stop, and record the grams.
A metric unit for measuring the mass of objects, grams are often used in science experiments. When you do not have a scale, you can make a balance scale from a ruler and use coins from your pocket to find the weight.

Apparently, the Mint was making both the 1964 silver dimes and the 1965 clad dimes at the same time, and someone at the Mint mistakenly substituted a silver disk (collectors call this a “planchet”) for a clad disk when a run of 1965 dimes was being made.
