It stands for armor penetration and is used to deteriorate an enemy’s ability to brush off (Save) wounds. AP will have a value of -,-1,-2 etc and one simply subtracts the AP from the targeted value’s Save characteristic. For example: A T’au Commander shoots an Eldar Dire Avenger with a Missile Pod.

The ability to Fall Back and shoot is now rare in 9th edition, making Ultramarines difficult to deal with in melee as they’re able to just drop back and shoot you and, with the Fall Back and Re-Engage Stratagem, charge as well.
