In what order should you read Tolkien’s books?
A Tolkien Reading OrderThe Hobbit. – I myself read The Hobbit after The Lord of the Rings, but while it is perfectly do-able, I think it’s a mistake. The Lord of the Rings. The Silmarillion. The Children of Húrin. Unfinished Tales. Beren and Lúthien. The Fall of Gondolin. The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Is The Hobbit an easy read?
I don’t know what you’re used to, but The Hobbit is a light, easy read intended for children. The Lord of the Rings is much more slow-moving, with fairly long descriptions of the landscape and the weather, big sections of history, and a lot of poetry. You’ll definitely have trouble with it.
